What Is Fasting & Prayer?

Fasting is one of the basic spiritual disciplines described in the Bible. It is based on the principle of denying our physical desires and replacing that desire with an earnest pursuit of God. Fasting is a process of going without food for a period of time, praying instead of eating. The simplest definition of fasting is no food, water only, praying when you would normally eat.

Over the years, different kinds of fasts have become popular – vegetable only, starches only, juice only, etc. People have also taken the Catholic principle of “lent” and applied the idea of sacrifice to this process; media fasts, television fasts, chocolate fasts, etc. This concept is based on denying something you like for a period of time, and through that sacrifice you seek to get close to God. Although these activities may have some benefit, it is important to distinguish them from Biblical fasting, which is no food, water only.

What About Health Problems?

Before you fast you should consult your physician to be sure there you will not suffer harmful side due to your physical condition (i.e. diabetes). You should NOT cease taking your regular medications when fasting unless instructed by your physician.

What Should I Expect When Fasting?

You will feel hungry! Although your body is telling you that you are about to die, you are not. The fact is that you can go up to 3 weeks without eating with no harmful side effects (as long as you’re drinking water). The benefit of fasting is learning to say NO to you physical desires. Fasting is the spiritual equivalent of lifting weights. The benefits of denying this basic physical appetite will have lasting spiritual effects, especially when it comes to resisting temptation.

How Do I Get Started?

If you have never fasted before, it is important to start slowly. During our upcoming week of fasting and prayer, consider choosing one meal per day to fast and pray when you would normally eat. God will honor your desire to seek him! The next time God calls you to fast, consider fasting an entire day (sunset to sunset). Once you can fast a day successfully, you can later trying 2 or 3 day fasts. Remember to drink PLENTY of water when fasting!
